Cụm phân từ (Participial phrase)

Một participial là một dạng động từ được dùng làm một tính từ. Các từ chẳng hạn như walking và running, typing và filing, standing và sitting là present participle. Past participle của những từ này là walked, ran, typed, filed, stood, và sat. Chúng ta hãy xem cách mà các phrase bắt đầu với present participle hoặc past participle được dùng làm tính từ – có nghĩa được dùng để mô tả.

Example 1: Running to the bus stop, Ms. Pulaski caught the 7:15 on time. Ta thấy rằng running to the bus stop mô tả về Ms. Pulaski. Bởi vì nó mô tả một danh từ, cho nên phrase này đóng vai trò là một tính từ. Running là một present participle.

Example 2: The accounting records, inspected by several auditors, were judged to be accurate. Cụm từ inspected by several auditors mô tả the accounting records, cho nên inspected là một past participle.

Chú ý! Nhớ rằng participial phrase được theo sau bởi một từ mà nó có thể bổ nghĩa.

NHẦM:

Running down the stairs, my toe caught in the carpet. Bởi vì toe đã không chạy xuống thang máy (stairs) được. Cho nên participial phrase, running down the stairs không thể bổ nghĩa cho toe.

ĐÚNG:

Running down the stairs, I caught my toe in the carpet. Tôi đang chạy xuống cầu thang.
