Cụm động từ nguyên mẫu (Infinitive phrase)

To run và to walk, to sit và to stand, to read và to write – tất cả đều là infinitive. Một infinitive, đơn giản chỉ là to cộng với một động từ. Một infinitive phrase là một cụm có chứa một infinitive (to cộng với động từ) và bất cứ modifier nào.

My goal is to move to the city by winter. Infinitive to move bắt đầu cụm to move to the City by winter. Cụm này là một infinitive phrase. Lưu ý rằng, infinitive phrase hoàn chính bao gồm hai prepositional phrase – to the city và by winter – để bổ nghĩa cho động từ nguyên mẫu to move.

Chú ý! Đừng nhầm lẫn một infinitive phrase với một prepositional phrase đơn giản bắt đầu bằng giới từ to. Prepositional phrase thì không có động từ.

Ví dụ:

to the office               to him               to the park                to the game

Còn infinitive phrase thì có động từ. Ví dụ:

to invite friends                to write memos          to prepare dinner
