Các liên từ là các từ kết nối. Bài này giới thiệu hai loại liên từ – liên từ kết hợp (coordinating conjunctions) và liên từ tương quan (correlative conjunctions).

Cách dùng liên từ kết hợp 

Có bảy liên từ kết hợp, trong đó bốn liên từ được dùng thường xuyên nhất là and, but, or, và nor. Ba liên từ còn lại – yet, for và so – ít được dùng thường xuyên. Các liên từ kết hợp thường nối kết hai hoặc nhiều sự việc giống nhau.

Hai hoặc nhiều danh từ:

assistants, managers, and supervisors          Brian, Joel, or David

Hai hoặc nhiều đại từ:

he and I                  you, her, or me

Các danh từ và đại từ (được xem là giống nhau đối với mục đích này):

Gary and he Joanne, Jay, or him

Hai hoặc nhiều tính từ:

slow and deliberate                       quick but cautious

Hai hoặc nhiều cụm từ:

to run or to jog proofreading manuscripts, editing documents, and revising reports.

Hai hoặc nhiều mệnh đề:

I came; I saw; and I conquered.

Our manager greeted the new employees, visited each department, and called everyone by name.

Dưới đây là sơ đồ giúp bạn xem nên dùng liên từ kết hợp nào:

TEST. Hãy gạch dưới hai lần liên từ trong mỗi câu sau đây, rồi viết nó vào chỗ trống bên phải. Sau đó  gạch dưới một lần các từ mà liên từ đó kết nối.

1/ Harvey and Dale were working together on the project.

2/ The speaker was witty and charming.

TEST. Những câu sau đây bị thiếu các liên từ. Hãy sử dụng một dấu mũ (^) để cho biết nơi cần chèn mỗi liên từ. Sau đó viết liên từ phù hợp vào khoảng trống phía dưới.
