Exercise 1. Read the following passage then practise speaking it aloud to yourself

Australia is located in the southern hemisphere. It is the driest country on earth and is the only country which covers an entire continent. From north to south the distance is 3,220 km and from east to west is 3,860 km. In area it is about the same size as the U.S.A. Today about 85% of the population of 18 million live in six major cities around the coast. Two thirds of the country is dry or desert.

Australia is an extremely rich country. It produces metals, precious stones, coal, grain, meat and wine, and has the biggest iron mines in the world. Australia has about one sixth of the world’s sheep and produces almost one third of its wool. Cattle are also kept, and about 15 million tons of wheat are grown every year. Fruits and vegetables are grown in areas Where there is enough water.

The climate is different depending on area. The south has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The north has warm, dry winters and hot, wet summers. The centre of Australia is hot and dry all the year round. Because of such a climate, much of daily life happens indoor.

Exercise 2. Practise talking about the similarities and differences between a desert and a plain. Use the cues below.
