ASEAN was founded on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand by the five original member countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. On 27 November 1971, ASEAN foreign ministers of five member countries issued the Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality Declaration in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The First ASEAN Summit was held in Bali, Indonesia on 24 February 1976. On August 1977, the Second ASEAN Summit was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to commemorate the 10th anniversary of ASEAN’s foundation. Brunei was formally admitted on 7 January 1984. On 15 December 1987, the Third ASEAN Summit was held in Manila, the Philippines. And the International Conference on Cambodia was convened in Paris, France on 23 October 1991. On 28 January 1992, the Fourth ASEAN Summit was organized in Singapore. At this meeting, the ASEAN leaders initiated the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). On 29 July 1995, Vietnam formally joined ASEAN.
