TỪ CHỈ  SỐ LƯỢNG

I. Some/ Any (một ít, một vài)

1. SOME

Some được đặt trước danh từ đếm được số nhiều (plural countable noun) hoặc danh từ không đếm được (uncountable noim) trong câu xác định.

Ex: Some people in my school like Jazz.

Can you get me some milk?

There was some snow here last winter.

Đôi khi some được dùng trong câu hỏi (mời ai dùng thêm gì hoặc đề nghị lịch sự)

Ex: Would you like some more sugar in your coffee?

Why don’t you take some apples home with you?

• Some of+ danh từ số nhiều hoặc danh từ không đếm được.

Ex: I wasn’t sure about some of the answers.

Remove the cover and put some of the sauce into a bowl…

Some of us are sensitive to smells, others fìnd colours easier to remember.

• Some còn được dùng như Đại từ (Pronouns).

Ex: Some men are wise and some are foolish.

• Some đứng trước Số đếm (Cardinal numbers), có nghĩa là khoảng chừng (about, approximately).

Ex: Some 100 people attended the meeting last night.

2. ANY

• Any thường được đặt trước danh từ đếm được hoặc danh từ không đếm được trong câu phủ định hoặc nghi vấn.

Ex: Do you have any money?

I don’t have any friends.

Have you seen any good films recently?

• Any of+ danh từ số nhiều hoặc danh từ không đếm được.

Ex: I couldn’t answer any of these questions.

I listen to Abba but I’ve never bought any of their music.

• Any còn được dùng như Đại từ (Pronouns).

Ex: I need some stamps. Are there any in your bag?

Have you got some £1 coins on you? – Sorry, I don’t think I have any.

Lưu ý

Các đại từ phiếm chỉ (something, anything, someone, anyone, somebody,…) cũng được dùng theo cách trên.

Ex: Do you have anything you’d like to say?

She bought something at the flea market.

I haven’t spoken to anyone all day.

Most/ Most of (phần lớn, đa số)

1. MOST

Most được dùng trước danh từ đếm được số nhiều hoặc danh từ không đếm được.

Most là từ hạn định (determiners) trong cấu trúc.

MOST + NOUN                

MOST + ADJECTIVE + NOUN

Ex: Most shops will be closed over the Christmas holiday.

Most eligible voters went to the poll.

(Đa số cử tri đủ tư cách đểu đi bầu cử.)

Most research in this field has been carried out by the Russians.

2. MOST OF

Most o/được dùng trước cụm danh từ số ít hoặc số nhiều.

(W OF + DETERMINER/ PRONOUN + NOUN~)

Ex: Most of the books are out of date.

Most of my time is spent in a classroom teaching English.

Most of us aren’t aware of our bad habits.

• Các cụm danh từ đứng sau most of thường xác định (phải có the, this, these, those… hoặc các tính từ sở hữu my, his, her…).

III. Much, Many, A great deal of, A large number of, A lot of, Lot of… (nhiều)

With countable nouns (Với các danh từ đếm được)	With uncountable nouns (Với các danh từ không đêm được)
many a large number of a great number of plenty of a lot of lots of	much (thường dùng trong câu phủ định hoặc nghi vấn) a great deal of (thường dùng trong câu xác định) a large / small amount of plenty of a lot of lots of

 

Ex: There is much concern about drug addiction in the country. There aren’t many weekends between now and Christmas. A small amount of land was used for keeping animals. There’s a great deal of truth in what he said.

Plenty of shops accept credit cards.

There’s no need to hurry. We’ve got plenty of time.

You talked a lot of nonsense to him and must apologize. There are a lot of tables and chairs in the room.

They have lots of money in the bank.

Lots of people learn a íòreign language.

A large number of students have signed up for the course.

Lưu ý:

Khi trong câu xác định có các từ very, too, so, as thì phải dùng much hoặc many.

Ex: He has been spending too much time with the television lately.

I’ve met him 50 many times, but I still can’t remember his name.

There are too many people chasing too few jobs.

IV. Few, A Few, Little, A Little (ít, một ít, một vài)

1. Few/ A Few: dùng trước các danh từ đếm được số nhiều (plural countable nouns).

Few: rất ít, hầu như không có (ít hơn những gì bạn muốn hoặc mong đợi)

Ex: There are few sweets left in the jar.

Few people can survive more than a week without water.

A Few: một vài (gần nghĩa với some)

Ex: We have a few minutes left in class. Do you have any questions? All she wanted was a few moments on her own.

2. Little/ A Little: dùng trước các danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns).

Little: rất ít (ít hơn những gì bạn muốn hoặc mong đợi)

Ex: There was little doubt in my mind.

Those social workers had little or no choice in the solution.

A little: một ít, một chút (gân nghĩa với some)

Ex: There’s a little ice cream left; who will eat it?

Would you like a little salt for your salad?
