READING

Part 1. Read the passage and choose the best option A, B, C or D to answer or complete each of the following questions.

It was a Sunday in October and Ngoc Mai was performing in her first competition. Some of the other gymnasts had performed frequently in competitions, but this did not worry Ngoc Mai. She was just content to do her best in this, her first competition.

Before the competition started, the girls chatted with each other. Some of them had come from different towns and were not used to being away from home. Ngoc Mai started talking to one of them and soon they were getting on well together. As soon as the competition started, there was no more time for talk. They each had to perform on three pieces of equipment as well as the floor. Ngoc Mai did well and made no serious mistakes.

Finally it was time for her performance on the high-and-low bars. She stood below them and waited. Then she looked at the judges, one of them nodded and she began. She jumped upwards, caught the high bar in both hands and did a neat circle. In all, she gave a very good performance and landed neatly and steadily on the floor at the end.

All the people watching clapped. It was clear that she had done well. Ngoc Mai glanced at the judges who were busy writing on their mark sheets. She thought she had done fairly well, but she didn’t think she had won. She went back to the bench to join the other gymnasts and sat down next to her new friend.

After a long wait, the results were announced, and Ngoc Mai was first. Victory for Ngoc Mai! She had gained more points than anyone else. Everyone cheered and clapped and her fellow gymnasts came up to congratulate her. She was delighted and very proud. The first thing she did was going up to her trainer and thanking her for all her help during her training.

Ruth Lawrence made, history yesterday when she came a clear first out of the 530 candidates who sat the entrance exam for St. Hugh’s College, Oxford. The all-women’s college is likely to offer her a scholarship. Ruth sat three three-hour papers – Algebra and Geometry; Calculus, Probability

and Statistics; and Math, Pure and Applied. Ruth has never been to school. Her father, Harry Lawrence, a computer consultant, gave up his job when Ruth was five to educate her at home. Her mother, Sylvia, who also works in computers, is the family breadwinner. Besides Mathematics, Ruth also enjoyed English, History, Geography/Nature Study and other subjects. She began to read at four and started academic subjects at five. Because she does not go to school, Ruth has not mixed much with other children. She enjoys serious conversation with adults. She works harder than other children, and concentrates on what she enjoys, principally Mathematics. If she does well at the College, Ruth expects to take a further degree and eventually hopes to become a research professor in Mathematics – an ambition she may achieve while still in her teens.
